A reader’s settings in Device Manager help identify where the reader is used, what workflow it belongs to, and how its tap event data should be organized.
This article explains the three reader settings used in Device Manager:
- Location
- Group
- Asset
Use this article to understand what each setting means and what situations may call for you to update it. To update a specific setting, see the respective Support articles for Location, Group, and Asset.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Reader settings
A reader’s assignment includes three parts:
- Location: The campus, school, building, or site where the reader is used
- Group: The workflow or area the reader belongs to and is configured for
- Asset: The specific placement or use point for the reader
For example:
Location: Sunny Hills Elementary School
Group: Cafeteria
Asset: Lunch Line #1
Or:
Location: Santa Margherita High School
Group: Campus Access
Asset: Side Gate
Location
The Location is the campus, school, building, or site associated with the reader.
The Location helps organize and manage reader data in Device Manager. It does not determine the reader’s workflow configuration.
You may need to update a reader’s Location if the reader is moved to a different campus, school, building, or site.
Group
The Group is the workflow or area the reader belongs to, such as:
- Nurse’s Office
- Cafeteria
- Attendance
- Campus Access
- Bus
The Group is especially important because it is linked to the reader’s configuration. This means the selected Group determines how the reader’s tap event data is processed and where it appears.
A reader must be configured for the Group it will be used in. For example, you can update a reader’s Group to Library in Device Manager, but unless that reader is configured for use in a library workflow, the tap event data it captures will not display correctly.
Creating a new Group label in Device Manager does not create the configuration required for the reader to operate in that Group. Contact your CI Solutions administrator or submit a Support ticket to request a new configuration.
Asset
The Asset is the reader’s specific placement or use point within the selected Location and Group.
Like the Location, the Asset helps organize and manage reader data in Device Manager.
For example:
- If the Group is Cafeteria, the Asset may be Lunch Line #1 or Lunch Line #2.
- If the Group is Campus Access, the Asset may be Front Gate or Side Gate.
- If the Group is Transportation, the Asset may be Bus 17.
If you've changed a reader's Group, you will almost always need to change the Asset as well.
Updating reader settings
You can update a reader’s Location, Group, Asset, or any combination of the three from the Edit Readers window in Device Manager.
If you need to update more than one setting, you can make all changes before clicking Update.
