Bulk Print vs. Onsite Printing for School Districts

Modified on Tue, 6 May at 8:56 AM

CI Solutions offers two methods for issuing RFID-enabled student ID cards: Bulk Print (Service Bureau) and Onsite Printing. Each method has its own workflow for handling RFID card data and integrations with third-party systems like student ridership applications.

We Print - Bulk Print Service (Service Bureau)

In a bulk print scenario, CI Solutions prints and encodes RFID cards at our service bureau and ships them directly to the district.

  • RFID Card Data Exchange: A CSV file containing the encoded card values is shared with the district for use in their systems.
  • Manual Import: District staff are responsible for manually importing this file into third-party applications (e.g., Student Ridership Application).
  • Card Activation Awareness: This process ensures the district has full visibility and control when large batches of cards are "activated" in their system.

Ideal For: Districts with limited onsite printing capabilities or that require mass card issuance before the school year

You Print - Onsite Printing (Badge Platform + RFID Card Printer)

With onsite printing, districts use the Badge web-based application in conjunction with our RFID-enabled card printer.

  • Real-Time API* Integration: RFID card data is automatically written back to third-party systems as each card is printed.
  • Controlled Activation: Cards are only “activated” as they are printed and issued, enabling a more incremental rollout.
  • Streamlined Workflow: Eliminates the need for CSV file handling and reduces the risk of mismatched card data.
  • Ideal For: Districts that want real-time updates, greater flexibility, and in-house control over card issuance.

*When API connections are not available, SFTP connections may be used.
